Harrison Weir (1824 – 1906) is one of the most beloved of the artists, who were prolific during the Golden Age of Book Illustration. Along with his many wonderful illustrations, we have him to thank for founding the National Cat Club in 1887. It’s no wonder so many of my favorite illustrations of his would be of cats.
Weir was an English artist who is also sometimes referred to as “The Father of the Cat Fancy.” He started his professional career as an apprentice printer – learning to engrave and draw on wood. His favorite subjects were birds, mammals and other subjects from nature. He wrote beautifully illustrated books about cats and poultry. You can see examples from both of his books here on ReusableArt.com.
