Farm Animals Drawing

There’s so much to see in this vintage farm animals drawing. The caption read “A May Party.” And, indeed it does look like the animals have been freed and let loose in the pasture. A pair of hens with their broods search for seeds and bugs. A mare and her young colt stand as if offering everyone the perfect shot of them. A calf is being chased by a trio of geese. A craggily tree provides shades for all of the animals. It’s a charming scene all done in black and white by the artist William De La Montagne Cary (1840 – 1922) who apparently signed much of his work W.M. Cary.

This large drawing was included in the May 10, 1881 edition of Harper’s Young People.
