h what an interesting fancy letter O image for someone who loves the out of doors or herons. This letter O with heron is one of several interesting drop cap letters that came from an 1893 book all about Yellowstone National Park and Alaska. An interesting combination of topics for a book but both heavily involve nature and the wild things that live there. The author did not identify an illustrator so, after 120 years, this vintage letter image is in the public domain.
Like several of the other letters I found in this book, the heron is drawn within the center of the letter with a natural backdrop of tall grasses. The letter itself is outlined in white with a dark interior. The double frame has some inverted scallops and a bit of decoration at the corners.
