Eastbridge Hospital of St Thomas the Martyr, Canterbury

This is a vintage drawing of Eastbridge Hospital of St Thomas the Martyr, Canterbury England. It was build in the 1100s and became a place of accommodation for pilgrims visiting the death place of Thomas Becket.

For our purposes, this black and white engraving of a historical building, shows a glimpse into life in 1827, when the engraving was published. There’s a young boy playing with his hoop, a horse and wagon and a number of people going about their own business along the cobble-stoned street.

It was included in The Mirror of Literature, Amusement, and Instruction, Vol. 10, Issue 268 which was released on August 11, 1827.
