Water Tupelo Tree

This tree is perhaps more recognizable by it’s trunk than it’s leaves and fruit. Also known as the cottongum, the water tupelo tree is often found in what are often referred to as cypress swamps. The tupelo trees are the ones with a large trunk that tapers upward like a child’s play horn. This copyright free tree image of a tupelo tree leaf and fruit is ready for downloading.

This tree drawing was created by Mark Catesby (1683-1749). Do you think he ever thought that almost 300 years after his death that we would still be enjoying his work. It was included in the 1767 book A Collection of 85 Curious Trees and Shrubs, the Produce of North America.
