Vasco Núñez de Balboa

A triumphant Balboa stands in the waters of the Pacific Ocean in this vintage drawing. Vasco Núñez de Balboa (1474–1519) was a Spanish explorer, governor, and conquistador. In 1513, he was the first European to have reached the Pacific from the New World. He founded a settlement in what is now known as Columbia.
