The Rules of Painting

Drawing of an art teacher giving instruction on the rules of painting. At least, that’s what I think this art drawing is depicting. A woman stands in front of a huge blank canvas holding a paint palette with a tag on her brushes marked RULES. At the base of the easel is a bouquet of flowers.

This is a fun vintage arts and crafts image because of the blank canvas – you can fill it with anything.

It’s such a shame that they didn’t identify an illustrator when they published The Girl’s Own Paper, Vol. VIII, No. 357, October 30, 1886.
