Perseus & Danae Set Adrift

Acrisius, King of Argos, was warned by the oracle at Delphi that he would one day be killed by his grandson. Fearing for his life but also fearful of killing Zeus’s son, he set his daughter Danae and her son Perseus adrift at sea. Zeus’s son Perseus lived to become one of Greek Mythology’s greatest heroes.

This vintage drawing depicts that fateful moment when mother and son were cast adrift in a wooden chest. Anyone looking for copyright free images of Greek Mythology may have a good use for this free image. This and a number of other mythology-related drawings were done by Walter Crane (1845-1915) for inclusion in the 1892 publication Wonder Book for Girls & Boys by Nathaniel Hawthorne.
