Watching the Birds

A very young Victorian child borrows a dining room chair to spy out the window at two birds. I suspect someone else was sitting at this window before this little tyke climbed on the chair. Perhaps, their mother had been watching the birds too. The child is wearing a long white nightdress, ankle height socks and little brown shoes. A hanging plant is just overhead. The wallpaper is a sort of nondescript beige on beige design. Overall, the color scheme is one of beiges and browns with a bit of green coming from the plant. If you look carefully, you can see the birds sitting together on a tree branch.

This vintage drawing was included in the vintage children’s book Holly Berries. It was illustrated by Ida Waugh (d. 1919) and released in 1881.
