Lady with Fruit

lady with fruit statueIs it just me or does this drawing look like someone put a basket of fruit on the head of a Greek statue? The lines of the pedestal she is standing upon, the flow of her gown and the fruit basket are so nicely done. But, when it comes to the lady herself, I’m not sure what the artist was thinking. She looks a bit mannish in her overall appearance. In fact, there was some shading on her chin that looked way too much like a beard for my taste.

I do think this drawing is lovely, despite my earlier comments. She was used at the end of a chapter to fill a page in an 1888 book on the playwright Thomas Otway.
