Greek Anthemions

greek anthemion designLovely design element featuring three Greek Anthemions or palmette. The fan-like design elements are often found used as architectural elements and are also found on pottery and other artistic pieces. They originated in Egypt but are most commonly associated with the Ancient Greeks.

I’ve found instances of this design before but they were usually on decorative columns or other curved surfaces that made the design unable to reused. This large Greek Anthemions design is the best one I’ve seen. The fact that it’s a simple line drawing makes it an even better addition to Reusable Art since it would be so easy to color and decorate to match your projects.

It was drawn for an 1870 book, Principles of Decorative Design. It includes three palmettes and a number of other decorative elements to create an overall cohesive design. I could see it used as a repeating background or even alone.
