D is for Devotion

Drop cap letter D symbolizing the devotion of the faithful. Is it any wonder with all the symbols of Christianity of the Church that this vintage letter D image was used to begin a book section that began with the word devotion? Altar boys, a priest, worshipers and a church are all seemingly protected by an image of Christ on the cross. This fancy letter D image may have a more limited use than our other drop cap letter images but it is certainly one of our most dramatic.

I’m so happy I found Hill’s Album of Biography and Art. It is unclear whether the illustrations are the work of the author. But what is clear is that this large 1882 children’s book by Thomas E. Hill was full of wonderful illustrations.
